Inspectors or Bribe Takers? When enforcing the quality of
your products in Asia, one of the last problems you want to deal with are
dishonest inspectors.
It has become commonplace at some inspection agencies for
inspectors to take bribes from a factory in order to claim that product quality
was conforming, even if it really wasn’t. In fact, even with myself present at
AQF inspections, I have observed company representatives casually try to bribe
our inspectors.
Obviously, the best inspection companies all claim to work
hard to prevent this occurrence, but how do you really know that you will not
come across crooked inspectors?
1.) Happiness of
employees. Are the inspectors paid well and well taken care of? The unhappy,
low paid inspectors are much more likely to take bribes to supplement their
salary. Inspectors with more to lose are much less likely to take bribes.
2.) Is there good
communication between inspectors and their colleagues?
3.) How well
monitored are the inspectors? The best inspection agencies constantly monitor
their inspectors’ performance to ensure consistent results.
4.) Do inspectors
buy into the company’s mission, and do they have a client-first attitude?
Making sure to ask these important questions is a vital step
in vetting out inspection companies and determining which will be able to give
the best inspections possible.
