While most factories are accustomed to, and generally are
welcoming to quality control agents coming in and out, some are not so open and
make it known in a variety of ways. Occasionally, factories will tell their
clients that quality control companies are not welcome (which is obviously a major
red flag). Once a factory will make up rules, for example “no pictures can be
taken in the factory”, for XYZ bogus reasons. However, sometimes, factories
will allow inspections, and wait until after the inspection has taken place to
practice their attempted subversion.
It has become quite commonplace for factories to berate
inspection agents to the client after the inspection has taken place to make
the inspection company look bad, and save face for the factory. This is
especially common when an inspection fails or a high % of defects are found.
I have heard all ranges of stories including:
Inspector acting
in a “mischievous” manner, asking for favors to pass the inspection
Inspector only
spent a half hour at the factory and didn’t check samples
Inspector
purposely damaged goods
XYZ excuse as to
how inspector didn’t complete inspection properly
Any good inspection agency will of course take any claims
seriously, and will investigate each to the fullest, but both sides of the
story must be considered in any situation. Some clients are very quick to place
blame when they get complaints from their factories, but clearly the factory’s
word must be taken with a grain (or a pound) of salt. These are, of course,
often the same factories that are forcing poorly made goods. And doing so without any guilt or
trepidation. As always, the Asian sourcing world is a scary place where
seemingly nothing can be taken at face value, but in considering the above and
investigating into situations more deeply, the bottom line can be discovered.
